set off flares and caught the ceiling on fire. the exits are jammed. the club became a death trap. there was so much smoke and fire, said one survivor, it was complete panic. hundreds were killed. most reportedly from asphyxiation. firefighters and ambulance crews did what they could, treating some of the more than 200 injured at the scene. others were taken to the hospital. by daylight, grief-stricken crowd gathered and a local gymnasium became a makeshift morgue as bodies were gathered for the heart wrenching process of identifying the dead. brazil's president tried to console her stricken nation in these times of sadness we are together, she said, and out of necessity we'll heal but do so remembering our sadness. this this deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade. it's an eerie resemblance to this one in rhoads.

they'll bring you the best coverage and we'll be beating behind the scene updates. in other news, man is in jail, charged with attempted murder in a shooting that injured an oakland police officer. daniel cook is accused of shooting an officer in the leg after trying trying -- trying to steal a bicycle. sky 7ht was over the scene. five men face charges in that case. both officers are expected to recover. we're learning new information about two unrelated shootings on the peninsula. both happened last night, within two hours and just blocks from one another in menlo park in east palo alto. in east palo alto a 19-year-old died after being shot self times. blocks away, shooting injured a

>> parking control officers in san francisco are now issuing tickets for vehicles parked at spirit meters on sunday and they were busy out there today, handing out 70 two dollar tickets for $62 for spirit meters everywhere else. the rule went into effect three weeks ago but until today drivers got warnings. construction on california's high speed rail line is supposed into begin in the san joaquin valley in july but the state has yet to buy a single acre of land on the route. officials hope to begin making offers over the next several weeks. the "los angeles times" says a con sew luted process could cause land owners to delay the project. high-speed rail officials say it won't be easy but they can still acquire the property and begin the project on time. >> more 50 hikers had to be rescued in arizona after heavy rain flooded a canyon in bare --

bargain hunters got a jump start hoping to find a hidden treasure in oakland. the oakland museum of california hosted a preview sale for the white elephant sale. museum booster call it the biggest and best rummage sale. it raises over 18 million tuesday over the years for the museum. this year's public sale will be march 2nd and 3rd and will feature 100,000 square feet of items for sale. >> wouldn't be a superpole if an orang tan didn't try to pick the winner? what has become an annual tradition in fresno, each year, he is given a choice of boxes with super bowl team blankets inside. the 25-year-old new mom picks the 49ers blanket out of the box want it few seconds and didn't even bother opening the box with the ravens blankets
